In his book “The Biology of Belief” Dr Bruce Lipton talks about manifestation of thoughts to become a reality. Many times, the results of positive beliefs are positive and vice versa. The effect of Placeboes is very well known in western medicine. For example, if a new drug is introduced there is a test known as blind placebo effect. Medical doctors give their patients pills and some pills have no medicine, others do. If there is a difference and the drug creates desirable effect, it passes the test.

I encountered that effect many times as a Manual Osteopath. For example, one time a woman came and right away told me that she does not feel comfortable without receptionist present. I did not insist on continuing the appointment, but she did not want to go home either. During the session she informed me that she is receiving a treatment for her knee and asked me not to touch it. It was just a trust issue. I pointed on the fact that you need to figure out if you trust a practitioner before you are booking appointment. Her reply was “I do not know you, so I cannot trust you”. That response baffled me. On some level she was right.

There is just one problem with that logic. You do not have to trust a practitioner, but you have to like him. If you dislike someone it is a very bad idea to go and take a treatment from them. You also have to be polite and respectful during an appointment and as cooperative as possible. I met some horrible practitioners in my lifetime, and believe me none of them deserved being mistreated. Most of the time they are just simple people trying to help.

Needless to say, the results of this treatment were far from fantastic. Nocebo effect is exactly the opposite of placebo. Negative thought manifest in negative results.

No wonder that optimists live longer and happier lives than pessimists.
