Auriculotherapy in Calgary is one of the quieter tools we use at Orthosports, and one of the more useful. It works with specific points on the outer ear to influence pain perception and nervous system regulation, and it fits alongside almost every other treatment we offer.
Our clinic is located in Manchester Industrial, near Chinook Mall in SW Calgary.
Here is how it works, what it helps with, and what a session looks like.
Figure 1. Auriculotherapy is based on the concept that the outer ear contains a microsystem representing the entire body. In this model, the body is mapped onto the ear in the shape of an inverted fetus. Different regions of the ear correspond to different anatomical areas, allowing therapists to stimulate specific points that may influence pain perception and nervous system regulation.
Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity is the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization. Constant stress and persistently high adrenaline and cortisol levels work against it. Combined with junk food, drugs, and injections of cortisone and steroids, they create imbalances and blood pressure problems. This also affects muscle tissue, bone density, immunity, and the anti-inflammatory response. Stress blocks the formation of new neural connections in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for encoding new memories. When these new connections are blocked, the hippocampus can actually shrink in size and memory can change. Many people still believe that muscles are independent units that need to be rubbed to reduce sensitivity and pain. This contradicts our philosophy. We believe in the power of regulating the sympathetic nervous system, which in our practice has produced far more consistent results.Reset Your Nervous System. Support Healing Naturally.
Modern life places tremendous stress on the nervous system. Chronic pain, muscle tension, poor sleep, headaches, anxiety, and slow recovery often have one thing in common — a body that remains stuck in a constant “fight-or-flight” state.Trigger Points and Pain Relief
Pain is rarely caused by a single muscle alone. Our approach recognizes that painful areas often involve trigger points — highly sensitive regions within muscles and surrounding soft tissues that may contribute to local pain, referred pain, and restricted movement. Many manual therapies work by reducing the activity of these trigger points, including:- Deep tissue massage
- Manual osteopathy
- Dry needling
- Stretching
- Acupuncture
- Myofascial release
Understanding the Auriculotherapy Map
Figure 1. Auriculotherapy is based on the concept that the outer ear contains a microsystem representing the entire body. What Is Auriculotherapy?
Auriculotherapy is a therapeutic technique that stimulates specific points on the outer ear. Developed from observations that the ear reflects the body’s anatomy, it is based on the concept of an inverted fetal map, where:- The earlobe represents the head and face
- The antihelix corresponds to the spine
- The scaphoid fossa represents the arms and legs
- The concha is associated with internal organs
- The upper ear represents the lower extremities
What Auriculotherapy Can Help With
Because auriculotherapy works through the nervous system rather than on a single muscle or joint, it is used across a broad range of presentations. At Orthosports, we most often apply it for:- Chronic pain that has not fully resolved with soft tissue work alone, particularly neck, shoulder, and low back pain
- Stress and anxiety, where the body is stuck in a sustained fight-or-flight state
- Poor sleep, including difficulty falling asleep and waking through the night
- Headaches and migraines, often alongside craniosacral or manual osteopathic treatment
- Jaw tension and TMJ discomfort, where the ear points sit close to the structures involved
- Slow recovery after injury, where nervous system regulation is limiting progress
- Digestive complaints linked to stress and vagal tone
How We Use Auriculotherapy at Orthosports
Auriculotherapy is rarely used on its own here. It is most effective as part of a session that also addresses the tissue and the movement pattern. In practice, that usually means combining it with:- MPS therapy (Microcurrent Point Stimulation) — the same DC microcurrent device we use along the spine and body can be applied to ear points, which makes the two approaches a natural fit
- Vagus nerve stimulation — several ear points sit over the auricular branch of the vagus nerve, which is the anatomical basis for the calming effect patients describe
- Manual osteopathy and deep tissue massage — the ear work regulates the nervous system while the hands-on work addresses the restriction itself
What to Expect in a Session
Auriculotherapy is added to a regular treatment session rather than booked separately. The ear work itself typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. You stay fully clothed and seated or lying comfortably. Your therapist locates the relevant points on the outer ear and stimulates them with light pressure, microcurrent, or ear seeds. Active points often feel tender for a few seconds, which is normal and settles quickly. There is no pain and no recovery time. If ear seeds are used, they stay in place for two to five days and you press them gently a few times a day at home. Your therapist will show you how. Most patients notice a shift in the same session — usually a drop in overall tension, and often a feeling of calm that continues for the rest of the day. For chronic patterns, the effect builds across a course of treatment rather than arriving all at once.Book your assessment — Orthosports Calgary, 205-222 58 Ave SW (Manchester Industrial, near Chinook Mall) · 403-984-9962
