What’s Actually Causing Your Lower Back or Hip Pain

Most people assume low back pain is caused by strain or “tightness,” but the real cause is often deeper, trigger points, postural imbalance, or something called functional scoliosis (a common pattern caused by prolonged sitting or asymmetrical use). Our manual osteopaths and massage therapists are trained to find these root causes and treat them with precision.

Some common contributors we see in our clinic include:

  • Muscle spasms in the quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, or glutes
  • SI joint dysfunction or hip rotation issues
  • Compensation from foot/leg alignment or uneven weight distribution
  • Fascia adhesions or chronic shortening from too much sitting

In this short video, Orthosports founder Sergey Raiter walks through a real clinical case of low back spasm and explains how targeted pressure, stretch, and muscle release techniques help reset the nervous system and relieve pain.”

How Our Orthopedic Massage Therapy Works

Every session is customized based on your pain pattern and mobility needs. Treatment typically includes:

  • Light effleurage to warm the tissue and assess the affected side
  • Deep, specific friction work into the muscle experiencing spasm
  • Manual pressure techniques to release chronic contractions
  • Passive stretch while side-lying to safely lengthen shortened muscle groups
  • Post-treatment alignment check to ensure improved range of motion

You’ll stay clothed or draped comfortably throughout, and we’ll check in with you about pressure levels. Our goal isn’t just to reduce pain in the moment, but to restore your body’s ability to move normally again.

No More Sore Neck, Shoulders or Hips!

Before I saw Sergey, I had multiple issues and was starting to wonder if I was ever going to be pain-free. I started feeling better after the first one-hour session and continued to improve with each successive treatment. Sergey is the therapist anyone should see if they are serious about recovery from pain!

Pain-Free After Two Visits

I went to see Sergey Raiter with back pain. Within one visit I was feeling good enough that I could sleep without waking in pain. After two visits I was pain-free. After three visits I felt better than I have in years. Sergay’s knowledge of massage therapy and the human muscle network is incredible. I highly recommend his skill set to anybody.

Treatments That Truly Get to the Root of the Issue

Sergey’s massages are unlike any other I’ve experienced. After having one appointment with him, I was hooked and couldn’t return to any other therapists. His treatments truly get to the root of the issue, to the extent that I don’t really need to see him often. His massages are for people looking to work through issues and get rid of them, not so much for relaxation. I highly recommend him if you’re looking for someone who understands the body, assesses your situation at the start of every massage appointment, and works to address the root cause of a problem.

Sergey Clearly Stands Out

Not all massage therapists are created equally – and Sergey is clearly one that stands out. Excellent technique and abilities. Loved the full assessment prior to getting started. Highly recommend.

FAQs About Lower Back & Hip Pain Massage

What’s the difference between orthopedic massage and regular deep tissue?

Orthopedic massage is more targeted. We assess which muscle or joint is causing the issue, then apply precise pressure and stretch. It’s often more effective for stubborn back and hip pain than general deep tissue work.

Will one session fix my lower back pain?

Sometimes yes, especially with muscle spasms or acute trigger points. But long-standing issues or posture-related dysfunction may require 4–8 sessions plus maintenance.

Is this type of massage safe if I have sciatica or a herniated disc?

We won’t perform aggressive techniques near active disc injuries, but many clients with sciatica benefit from gentle fascial release and muscle balancing to reduce pressure on the nerve. We’ll adapt based on your condition.

Do you treat athletes or just office workers?

Both! We see lifters, cyclists, hockey players, and everyday Calgarians who sit too long at work. Whether it’s sport strain or desk posture, we’ll customize the approach to your body and goals.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear loose or stretchy clothing if possible. You’ll stay comfortably draped, but some sessions may involve side-lying or stretch positions, so flexibility is key.
