Knee Pain Massage in Calgary: ITB Syndrome, Runner's Knee and Injury Recovery

If your knee pain flares up on runs, stairs, or after a hard workout, you’re not alone. At Orthosports Calgary, we treat knee pain caused by IT band syndrome, runner’s knee, patellar tendinitis and post injury recovery with a hands on, assessment based approach. Every session starts by identifying exactly which structure is irritated, not a generic full body routine. We’re located in Manchester Industrial, across from Chinook Mall, with free parking and direct billing available at your visit.

What’s Causing Your Knee Pain?

Knee pain rarely has one single cause. These are the patterns we see most often in Calgary runners, cyclists and active clients:

  • IT band friction syndrome: pain on the outside of the knee, often worse on downhill runs or after repetitive bending.
  • Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome): a dull ache around or under the kneecap that flares with stairs, squats or long runs.
  • Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee): pain just below the kneecap, tied to jumping, running or heavy squat load.
  • Meniscus and ligament related strain: often follows a twist or fall, and needs careful assessment before treatment.
  • Post-surgical stiffness: reduced range of motion and lingering tightness after a knee procedure.
  • General overuse and desk-related stiffness: tightness from long periods of sitting or sudden increases in training.

How We Treat Knee Pain

Every session is assessment led, not a routine we repeat on everyone:

❶

We start with a quick assessment of the joint and surrounding muscles to confirm what we’re actually treating.

❷

Myofascial release on the tibialis of the lower leg warms the tissue and prepares it for deeper work.

❸

We check the ligaments on both sides of the knee to make sure none are damaged before going further.

❹

Cross fiber massage at the muscle insertion point on top of the knee, a common pain site, increases range of motion.

❺

Circular friction on the inside of the knee, just below the patella, addresses the gracilis, semitendinosus and sartorius, a spot where three muscles converge and injuries happen often.

❻

You leave with clear home guidance, not just a treatment and goodbye.

Sergei & Brian are both amazing. They always take time to listen and understand, then get to work. Massage or NKT are purposeful strategic with immediate and lasting effect. The best of the best, by far.

Sergei and his team are exceptional. My mum had a curved spinal cord, severe pains in her hip as well as arthritis. After a few sessions at Orthosport, her posture has been corrected and she has no more pains. I will recommend Orthosports anytime!!

Every time I go for treatment, I asked for deep tissue and let them go as deep as it needed to fix the problem. By the evening I feel 20yr younger and can go back to work the next morning.

Brian was very informative as he worked through the various parts that could be connected to the problem area explaining the process as well as what could be causing the issue. He quickly figured out and targeted on working through the affected areas and the whole session was relatively painless whilst very effective.

FAQs About Knee Pain Massage in Calgary

What causes knee pain after running?

The most common causes we see are IT band syndrome, which causes pain on the outside of the knee, patellar tendinitis, which causes pain below the kneecap, and imbalances in the surrounding muscles. Treatment starts with a hands on assessment to confirm which structure is involved before we build a treatment plan.

How is orthopedic massage different from a relaxation massage?

Orthopedic massage is assessment based. We check the ligaments and specific muscle insertion points first, then use targeted techniques such as myofascial release and cross fiber friction on the exact structures involved, rather than a general full body routine.

How many sessions will I need for knee pain?

It depends on how long you’ve had the issue. A recent strain can improve in a few sessions. A chronic IT band or tendon issue usually needs a short course of visits combined with home self care guidance from your therapist.

Is knee pain massage covered by insurance?

We offer direct billing to many extended health providers. Coverage for massage therapy varies by plan, so we recommend confirming your benefit with your provider before your visit; our front desk can help you check at booking.

When should I see a doctor instead of booking a massage?

If you have sudden swelling, can’t bear weight, feel the knee giving way or locking, or suspect a ligament or meniscus tear, see a physician or physiotherapist first. Massage supports recovery once a serious structural injury has been ruled out.

Is treatment painful if my knee is already sore?

Pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level, especially around an irritated joint. It’s normal to feel some intensity during targeted work, but it should never be sharp or excruciating, and you’re in control throughout.

Can I still run or train while I’m being treated for knee pain?

Often yes, in a modified form. Your therapist will advise on load and rest based on what the assessment finds, so you can keep moving without making the underlying issue worse.

Where are you located, and is parking available?

We’re in Manchester Industrial, directly across from Chinook Mall, with free on-site parking and easy access from the Chinook LRT Station.
